STI Testing & Treatment
Have you recently had unprotected sex? Did a condom or other form of protection fail? If so, getting tested for STIs as soon as possible is important for protecting your health.
What Are STIs?
STI stands for "sexually transmitted infection." These infections are also commonly referred to as sexually transmitted diseases, or STDs.
STIs are infections that can spread through sexual contact, including the exchange of bodily fluids such as semen and vaginal fluids. Some can also be transmitted through blood.
What Are the Symptoms of STIs?
There are many different types of STIs, and each can cause its own set of symptoms. Below are two common STIs that we test for at Willow Grove Care Center, along with some symptoms you may experience.
Chlamydia
Chlamydia is a bacterial infection that affects the genital tract. In women, possible symptoms include:
-
Painful urination
-
Lower abdominal pain
-
Vaginal discharge
-
Pain during sexual intercourse
-
Bleeding between periods
Gonorrhea
Gonorrhea is another bacterial infection that can affect the genital tract. Women may experience symptoms such as:
-
Thick, cloudy, or bloody vaginal discharge
-
Pain or burning when urinating
-
Heavy menstrual bleeding or bleeding between periods
-
Pain during bowel movements
-
Anal itching
These are just some of the possible symptoms of STIs. Many people experience no symptoms at all, especially in the early stages of an infection. Even without noticeable symptoms, STIs can cause health complications and be passed to sexual partners.
If you're sexually active, especially if you've had unprotected sex, STI testing is an important step in protecting your health.
STIs and Pregnancy
If you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant, STI testing is especially important. Certain STIs can be passed to your baby during pregnancy or childbirth and may result in serious, even life-threatening, complications. Fathers are welcome at Willow Grove Care Center.
